Investigations and crime prevention
Tips for business owners
The Ballwin Police Department recommends business owners take proactive security measures: install exterior surveillance cameras and register them with the Police Department, maintain well-lit parking areas, train employees on cash-handling procedures and robbery response, limit cash on hand using regular safe drops, position registers to be visible from the street, and post security signage.
Fraud prevention
Identity theft is one of the fastest-growing crimes in the St. Louis area. Thieves use stolen information to open credit accounts, obtain loans, and drain bank accounts. Common scams include phishing emails from fake banks, lottery schemes, Nigerian money offers, overpayment scams, online dating fraud, work-at-home schemes, and counterfeit checks.
Protecting yourself from fraud
Review credit reports annually from all three bureaus. Shred financial documents before disposal. Use strong, unique passwords for online accounts. Minimize personal items carried in your wallet. Secure home documents in a locked location. Monitor billing cycles for missing statements. Use a secure mailbox for outgoing mail.
If you are a victim of fraud
Report the crime to the Ballwin Police Department at (636) 227-9636. Contact the Missouri Attorney General at 1-800-392-8222. Alert your banks and credit card companies immediately. Contact all three credit bureaus (Equifax, TransUnion, Experian). File an FTC complaint at 877-ID-THEFT. Notify the Social Security Administration at 800-269-0271 if your SSN was compromised.
Burglary prevention
Keep exterior doors locked, even when home. Use deadbolts and reinforce door frames. Install motion-activated exterior lighting. Trim landscaping near windows and doors to eliminate hiding spots. Use timers on interior lights when away. Do not advertise vacations on social media. Request a vacation security check from the Police Department when traveling.
Auto larceny prevention
Most vehicle thefts in Ballwin are crimes of opportunity targeting unlocked cars. Always lock your vehicle and pocket the key. Remove all valuables, because even loose change in an open console attracts attention. Roll up windows when parking on the street. Park in your driveway or well-lit areas near building entrances. Consider an audible alarm triggered by motion or impact. Scan your car's interior for valuables before walking away.
