Snow and ice removal

When plowing begins

Snow plowing operations commence when accumulation reaches approximately two inches. During winter storms, crews operate around the clock until the storm ends and all streets are cleared.

Plowing priorities

Streets are cleared in priority order: major arteries first, followed by collector streets, then minor subdivision streets and cul-de-sacs. This ensures emergency vehicles and high-traffic routes are accessible as quickly as possible.

Pre-treatment

The city uses salt brine (a combination of rock salt and water) applied at 50 gallons per lane mile before forecasted snowfall during regular work hours. The brine creates a protective barrier that prevents snow from adhering to pavement. Salt brine is not applied if rain or freezing rain is predicted. Instead, deicing salt is spread approximately four hours before expected freezing rain.

Parking restrictions

City Ordinance Section 15-266(c)(1) prohibits street parking when snow accumulates two inches or more, or during freezing rain and ice events. This restriction continues until streets are cleared for emergency vehicles. The Police Department enforces this strictly, and violating vehicles may be towed under Ordinance Section 15-277.

Tips for residents

Clear 15 feet of curbline in advance of your driveway to minimize snow windrow buildup from plows. The city cannot prevent some snow accumulation at driveways, but clearing shoulder areas in advance significantly reduces obstruction.
