Tree programs

Street tree services

Public Works manages all trees growing in or upon city-managed streets and public rights-of-way. The department provides street tree removal and trimming services and operates a tree planting program. Crews do not handle trees located on private property.

Requesting tree service

Residents can request tree service through the city's online Request Service form or by calling (636) 227-9000, option 2. A Public Works supervisor will assess the site, and if the tree qualifies, a work order enters the system. Crews handle the most severe tree work orders first, so response timing varies by urgency.

Current tree removal efforts

The city contracted Gamma Tree Experts (approved June 2024) to remove dead trees from public property. A 63-tree removal list is actively being processed. Additionally, city crews are removing ash trees threatened by the invasive Emerald Ash Borer. Over 2,000 ash trees were identified in the right-of-way.

Tree planting program

The city plants new trees in public rights-of-way to replace removed trees and expand the urban canopy. Contact Public Works for information about requesting a tree planting in your right-of-way.

Don't top your trees

Topping (the drastic removal of large branches or the top of a tree) is one of the most harmful practices for tree health. It leads to weak regrowth, increased susceptibility to disease and insects, sunscald on exposed bark, and ultimately shortens the tree's lifespan. Proper crown thinning and reduction cuts by a certified arborist are the recommended alternatives.

Seasonal schedule

Tree work occurs year-round, except during summer street replacement projects and fall leaf collection season. Please be patient, as there are nearly 200 trees slated for removal at any given time.
